British Tombs - Panchalankurichi

HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDS :

There is a cemetrery enclosed.by a compound wall of about four feet high with tombs of 44 British soldiers, in three groups, in Panchalankurichi.The tombs carrying dates March 31,1801 and May 24, 1801 are obviously of soldiers who fell during the battle with Umaidural.

The first group consists of ten tombs of army officers whose names are mentioned in the inscription. These tombs are on a higher pedestal and are in a fairly good state of preservation. The tombs of other two groups of 35 person names are not mentioned were found damaged.
