Dharmapuri district is having long and continuous historical evidences from Neolithic period (5,000 BCE). In the olden days the people of this area had the custom of erecting memorial stones for the persons who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the society. They protected the people from the wild animals or the other rival tribes. These memorial stones were called as 'hero stones'. There are large numbers of hero stones found in this district; to some extent it is noticed that each village of this district has atleast one hero stone. These stones are datable between 5th century CE & 17th century CE.

Antiquities on Display

"Neolithic Stone implements, Megalithic appendages, Sword, Dagger, Sarcophagus, Urn, Three legged jar, Five legged jar, Stone Sculptures like Jain, Buddhist and Durga,

Terracotta figurines, lamps and pipes, Coins, Medals, Cannons, Wooden objects, Copper objects, Iron objects and Palm leaf manuscripts, More than 25 hero stones of different kinds are exhibited in this museum.

Dharmapuri is situated at 25 km from Morappur Railway Station. The archaeological museum was formed in the year 1979 with exclusive exhibits of hero stones.
