Dharmapuri district is having long and continuous historical evidences from Neolithic period (5,000 BCE). In the olden days the people of this area had the custom of erecting memorial stones for the persons who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the society. They protected the people from the wild animals or the other rival tribes. These memorial stones were called as 'hero stones'.
